CHAPTER 21

MONDAY

We stopped for brunch once we were in my town. I directed Bear to a diner and he had to back his truck into a spot.

He held out an arm and I took it as we headed inside.

“This was the place to be in high school.” I unwrapped my scarf and Bear took it and my jacket from me to hang it with his on the hook by the booth.

As if to illustrate my point, a loud group of teens clamored in and took up a huge round table in the back.

After we were seated, I directed Bear to the table where the menu was embedded in thick varnish.

“I highly recommend their hamburgers and shakes. They even have a burger with a scrambled egg on it.” I pointed the items out with my index finger. He lifted my hand to his lips again.

The server came by and added her opinion, “The cutest. Please tell me this is the first date?”

She had a high, bouncy blonde ponytail and dark red lips.

“Sort of.” Bear shrugged his shoulders and his eyes twinkled.

Oh, it was on like Donkey Kong. The ending of the apartment work had freed up some reservations he had, I was guessing.

Bear ordered what I suggested and I got a matching meal. After the server had placed our water glasses, we knew we had a few minutes to ourselves.

“Sort of a date, huh?” I sipped my water and the ice clinked on the side of the glass.

“If that’s okay with you? I’ve had the best time with you in the mornings and I really found myself worrying that we won’t spend time together anymore.” He shot a look over his shoulder and then rested his hopeful gaze on me.

“It sounds super okay to me.” We soaked up the surroundings as we waited for our food. The high schoolers were loud and flirty.

“What were you like in high school?” I ran a finger down the side of my glass, making space in the condensation.

“Quiet. I liked to not make a fuss. I did my homework and then got home to do real work with my dad and grandpa.” He mimicked me, drawing on his glass. “I bet your experience was very different.”

“It was and it wasn’t. What Mom made us do wasn’t considered work, but it was required. We’d fight with her. She’d fight with us. There were expectations we had to meet. And we always fell short. I loved art. She loved the idea of being in high society.” I quieted down because the server brought us our food.

I heard Bear moan at the sight of the burger. The smell of the food hit me next and reminded me I was hungry as well.

We literally spoke in grunts and moans while we ate for the first few minutes.

Bear circled back to the high school conversation as soon as we were both slowing down. “Hey, I feel like my question came off wrong. I guess I figured with your fancy upbringing it would be all about parties and great gifts.
